Christmas in the Park
On Christmas Day 2008 some friends were driving downtown and decided to buy needed items and hand them out to folks who were living on the streets. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
In 2019 we had over 800 volunteers who brought an assortment of new and gently used items to the park to help make Christmas Day something special for folks who might not otherwise receive special items. They served close to over 1000 individuals experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty. There were new shoes, boots, backpacks, hand-warmers, hats, gloves, coats, clothing, hygiene items, cold weather sleeping bags.
In addition the Saint Andrews UMC Grill Team was partnered with Christ in the City to serve a delicious meal which included fresh grilled burgers on site.
The event has grown from a few families setting up tables with an assortment of items to give away into a large free market shopping experience for our guests.
In this our 12th year, 2020, things are going to look a bit different due to the SARS-COV-2 viral pandemic. This year all items donated must be new. On Christmas Day the items will be sorted, sanitized, and prepped for delivery to our partner organizations around the metro area. We are collaborating with shelters, day centers, and street outreach teams to make sure we can get people the essential items they need to survive the elements.
